Bridesmaid Dresses for a Formal Wedding

One of the most important aspects to consider when planning a wedding is choosing your bridesmaid dresses. The overall style of your wedding can be seen by your guests through your bridesmaid dress designs. After the bride, the bridesmaids’ dresses are among the most visible aspects of your wedding. Your bridesmaids will precede you down the aisle, and appear in almost all of your photographs and memories from your special day. For an extremely formal wedding, it is important to choose bridesmaid dresses that are beautiful and elegant to tie in with the theme of your wedding.

Typically for formal weddings, long or floor length bridesmaid dresses are accepted. Many believe that formal weddings are almost the only place where long bridesmaid dresses are used. Floor length bridesmaid dresses can help you to portray the idea of elegance and sophistication. Paired with the perfect hairstyle, shoes, and flowers, elegant dresses can help your guests visualize the gracefulness that your wedding day is representing.

Even though longer bridesmaid dresses are characteristically seen at formal weddings, many individuals opt for using shorter length bridesmaid dresses for their nuptials. Tea length and shorter dresses can be suitable for formal weddings, especially if they are in dark, rich colors. A short dress might be perfect for your bridal party if the color and design coordinates well with the theme and idea of your wedding. It is important to remember that this is your wedding, and you should be choosing only options that are going to make you happy. Bridesmaid dresses for a formal wedding can be just about any length, as long as you keep in mind the formality that your chosen dress is portraying.

It is also important to pay particular attention to the style of your bridesmaid dresses when it comes to a formal wedding. When you are perusing various styles of bridesmaid dresses, there are a few things that you should keep in mind, including the fit of the gown. Many bridesmaid gowns at formal weddings are form fitting, flowing, or often high waist gowns. If you choose to have a formal wedding try to think about attire that women would wear for red carpet events or a night at the theater. If you are having a formal wedding, it is your night to walk down the red carpet and to ensure that your bridesmaids look as fabulous as you do.

In general, you want to think about bridesmaid dresses for a very formal wedding as a way to promote the formality of your event. Therefore, color is going to be a very important component to contemplate. For most formal weddings, somber colors such as black, deep blues or purples are usually used. There are some exceptions, however, such as shades of silver and gold. For the most part, formal bridesmaid dresses should be darker colors, keeping in mind the elegance of a black-tie affair.

When putting together your formal bridesmaid attire, you also want to incorporate accessories such as shoes, jewelry and flowers, that will work together to complete the look. Most of the time, a dress is just a dress. However, when you add to the look it helps to portray the impression that you are trying to achieve. The shoe you choose is really going to make a difference when it comes to the formality of the ceremony. Flat shoes or strappy sandals are not going to be as formal as a beautiful high heeled pump might be. Also, for a formal wedding, you might decide to have your bridesmaids wear extravagant jewelry such as diamond necklaces, bracelets, or eye-catching earrings. For a wedding that is less formal, different jewelry will be appropriate. The flowers that you choose will also add to the elegance of your bridesmaids’ appearance. A dress that is very formal will usually be accompanied by more formal looking flowers such as lilies or white roses. Adding a ribbon or other special tie around the bouquets can also add to the overall look. A less formal bridesmaid dress can be accompanied by less formal flowers such as daisy’s or carnations.

Overall, when it comes to bridesmaid dresses, it is up to you to make sure that the dress you choose portrays the overall elegance and formality of your wedding. Adding little touches and accessories such as jewelry, flowers and shoes can help complete the overall look you are trying to achieve.

Bride and bridesmaid roles WedNet

It’s very important that brides and potential attendants discuss the expected expenses before the attendants accept their positions. (Grooms and their attendants either rarely have these problems or rarely complain about them.) I therefore present the following exciting, and totally new…

Mutual Responsibilities of the Bride and Her Attendants.

The bride is responsible for:

Informing the attendants, when she asks them, of the level of investment (both time and money) she expects of them. A bride who does not know where, when, or how formal her wedding will be is not ready to ask her attendants yet.

Consulting with the attendants about the cost, style, and color of the outfits they will wear.

Recognizing that a $59 dress worn by your best friend is far more beautiful than a $300 dress on a professional model.

Being open to the idea of relatively classic, neutral styles and colors. A “neutral” is neutral because it coordinates well with many other colors.

Resisting the urge to fixate on dyed-to-match shoes, and entirely refusing to get involved in choosing the bridesmaids’ stockings or undergarments.

Paying for professional hairstyling or make-up for the bridesmaids if she suddenly decides, months after asking the attendants, that these services are a necessity.

Graciously accepting that a shower is a “nice to have” not a “need to have”-and that it’s no reflection on the friendship if her attendants can afford only a small shower or no shower.

Never springing a surprise expense on the bridesmaids.

Recognizing that travel greatly increases an attendants’ expenses- and helping with those expenses however possible. If the couple cannot follow the old custom of providing lodging for the attendants, then at the very least they should help by recommending affordable hotels and by keeping the other attendant expenses low.

The attendants are responsible for:

Asking the bride about expectations and expenses-if she doesn’t volunteer the information-before accepting or declining the position.

Returning the bride’s calls promptly when she asks about preferences for dress colors and styles. Bridesmaids who don’t return messages have only themselves to blame if they end up wearing skin-tight lime green gowns.

Leaving your worst personal insecurities home when invited on dress-hunting expeditions. If you always hate your rear every time you look in a mirror, rest assured that you’ll hate it in the dresses you try- and live with it, okay? Similarly, the bridesmaid who is half your size was not chosen solely to make you feel huge (or vice-versa).

Leaving your preferences for how you’d do your perfect wedding at home, too. As long as you look nice in the dress and don’t feel that you’re squandering your rent money, it doesn’t matter if you’d put your own bridesmaids in it.

Being honest, polite, and direct about dealing with areas of discomfort as soon as they arise. Ignoring phone calls or refusing to send measurements will not make an unwanted, over-priced dress go away. If you feel you must drop out of the wedding for any reason, tell the bride as soon as possible. The news will hurt less if you deliver it three months before the wedding instead of three days before.

Consulting with other attendants on any project that will call for their time, effort, or money. You simply cannot assume that Bridesmaid #4 will pay a quarter of the shower costs if you didn’t ask her.

Recognizing that poverty is not shameful, and that saying “I’d love to do it, but I really can’t afford it” is a polite and reasonable response to a request that you can’t handle.

An interesting note on the traditional division of expenses-I discovered that in South Africa , the bride traditionally buys her attendants’ wedding outfits. This wouldn’t be a bad custom to adopt in the United States , as it would motivate brides to trim their tastes in bridesmaids’ dresses to their own budgets rather than to what they wish their attendants could afford. (The same could be said of grooms, but tuxedo quality and prices don’t vary as much. Men have it easy!)

Bridesmaid Jewelry: 5 Ways to Keep your Wedding Party Happy

Everyone knows that accessorized bridesmaids are happy bridesmaids. And happy bridesmaids? Well, they turn out to be the very best kind. So do yourself a favor and choose bridesmaid jewelry your girls will love. Give it to them as a traditional bridesmaid gift. (Many custom jewelry designers even offer discount packages for orders of multiple items.) Here, custom jewelry designer Sarah Stephens offers 5 tips to keep your bridesmaids happy and supportive.

1. Choice is Everything

While your girls are likely willing to comply with whatever Bridezilla-esq demands you impose, it never hurts to let them know that you respect their needs, too. So we recommend choosing one item – such as hairstyle – that they can do themselves. That leaves you in control of their necks, wrists and earlobes.

2. Honor Your Made of Honor

The best Maids of Honor are the ones you never notice doing anything – because they take care of all the seating hiccups, annoying relatives and wrinkles in your train while you’re busy enjoying your day. If you think that describes your best lady (or that a great jewelry bribe might show her the light) reinforce how important she is by making her gift a little more special than the rest. Throw in a matching bracelet or earrings; choose a slightly different color or larger gemstone; give her Sterling Silver versus the other maids’ Gold; or pick a design that works especially well with her personal style.

3. Make them Unique

More and more it is common to see bridesmaids wearing varied styles of the same dress. This allows each woman to find a cut that works for her body, leaving her feeling attractive (and thus supportive). So why not do the same with jewelry? Choose a gemstone combination according to color and then have it strung by a custom jeweler in a few different designs. Lariat necklaces work well with V-necks; chokers complement square-cut tops; and multi-layers fall nicely with scoop necks. Or, if you really want to make your bridesmaids feel special, choose the design according to what you know they love best. Nothing spells support like a bridesmaid who feels appreciated.

4. Wearable Jewelry is Favorite Jewelry

The best way to make the memories of your wedding last forever is to choose bridesmaid jewelry that will be worn forever. So keep in mind what your girls typically like to wear – gold or silver? Chunky jewelry or delicate? – when picking out their wedding accessories. Find pieces that are modern and fun, but not so trendy that they will be obsolete a year from now. If ever in doubt, ask yourself “Would I wear this?” If the answer is yes, you’ve got yourself a gift.

5. Make it Personal

Show your appreciation by stressing that this jewelry is a gift. Most custom jewelry shops will offer wrapping for free, but be sure to check beforehand. Take it one step further and write a quick note to each of your girls to say Thank You one more time. Your effort won’t go unreturned.

Three Tips For Choosing Bridesmaid Jewelry

Wouldn’t it be great if just for one day – your wedding day – all the women serving as your bridesmaids could all look similar, if not exactly alike? How easy it would be then to outfit them all with the same dresses, shoes, hairstyles, bridesmaid jewelry, etc.!

But, alas, bridesmaids do not come in cookie-cutter sizes or shapes. Some have long hair, some have short hair; some are petite, others are tall; some can wear any kind of jewelry with flair and grace, while others need some second thoughts before donning those long, dangling earrings. (Yes, even some otherwise beautiful bridesmaids have big ears!) So before you automatically choose the jewelry for your ‘maids, think along these lines.

Think “Complementary”

But you can still have all your bridesmaids have that pulled-together look – it just takes some planning. Perhaps there are one or two that absolutely cannot wear any type of long, dangly earring without calling attention, to, um, “larger than normal” ears. Don’t despair! Mix up the jewelry by having some of them wear necklaces, some earrings, and some can wear bracelets.

Just make sure the jewelry is all in the same color, style, and material. This will add cohesiveness to the bridesmaid jewelry that will also include interest. For instance, you can have one or two of the bridesmaids wearing those long earrings you adore that are made of peach-colored abalone, just make sure the others are wearing necklaces, bracelets, or brooches made with the same shell and in the same color and style.

Keep Necklines in Mind!

Another thing to you have to keep in mind when selecting bridesmaid jewelry has to do, of course, with the dresses. You don’t want your bridesmaids wearing long pendants that hit just at the spot where a plunging neckline begins. Nor do you want to try to have them wear choker-style necklaces with dresses having necklines that come up the neckline, such as a halter-style dress. A good rule of thumb for selecting necklaces is this: Choose them to follow the style of the dress’ necklines. For a v-neck dress, for example, choose necklaces with a Y-drop, lariat or back-dangle, or the classic pendant-style necklace. And, of course, it may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people forget that brooches cannot be worn with strapless bridesmaid dresses!

Give it Away!

Something to think about when you’re shopping for bridesmaid jewelry is that you can also give your selections to the bridesmaids as gifts. Present the pieces to them in pretty boxes tied with a bow. If you have chosen wisely, they will be able to wear the jewelry for years afterward – and it’s guaranteed they’ll remember your happy day each time they do!

Bridesmaid jewelry does not have to be expensive. And some places online that sell it offer discounts when you purchase in quantity, especially when you’re buying sets – the earrings and the necklace (and sometimes bracelets, too). So take the time to surf the ‘Net awhile and checkout what’s out there – you are sure to be pleasantly surprised!

Beautiful Bridesmaid Hairstyles for Any Type of Wedding

When it comes to all of the many details needed to successfully plan a wedding, many times, deciding on the bridesmaid hairstyles is near the end of a rather long list of things to do.

Very rarely will all of the bridesmaids have the same length and type of hair. And, because of this it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the many types of hairstyles suitable for varying lengths of hair.

To make things a bit easier, divide styles into different categories, one for short hair, one for longer hair, and the last for up-dos, perhaps one of the most popular types of wedding hairstyles.

The up-do is probably one of the most favored bridesmaid hairstyles because it’s one of the easiest to take care of after styling.

The French twist is one of the most beautiful and elegant types of wedding hairstyles that can be created to take on a variety of different looks, and this particular style doesn’t take long to do either.

French twists are best for hair that’s medium to long, although not impossible for shorter lengths, and is easily done by gathering all of the hair from the back, twisting in, and then finishing by securing with pins or decorative clips. The variations and intricacies of the French twist up-do will depend on the bridesmaid’s type and length of hair as well as the way her hair is cut.

Bridesmaid hairstyles may feature ringlets or tendrils of hair for a soft, feminine look, as well as including bangs either straight or curled. Pin curls can be done for a more showy look, which will depend, of course, on the formality and type of wedding.

For women with shorter hair, the front can be styled exactly like those bridesmaids with longer locks, or hair extensions can be used to create a uniform look if desired.

Long, flowing curls are one of the easiest bridesmaid hairstyles to care for and are best suited for medium to longer hair. Using a curling iron or hot rollers, the curls created are fluffed out rather than combed and loosely arranged with the fingertips before misting with a light hair gel or spray to set the style.

Bridesmaid hairstyles can be enhanced with combs, barrettes, or any type of sparkling embellishment that will emphasize the style and complement the dresses as well as the theme or formality of the wedding.

Bridesmaid Hairstyles For Medium Length Hair

It is difficult enough to decide on the perfect hairstyle for the bride; figuring out the best look for a group of bridesmaids too can be even more challenging. If your bridesmaids have medium length hair, you will at least find that it is a versatile length with many pretty options for hairdos. Try out one or more of these lovely bridesmaid hairstyles for your attendants with medium length hair.

The first thing to keep in mind is that it is important that your bridesmaids have hairdos that match the style of their dress and the tone of your wedding. This is not to say, however, that they should also match each other. In fact, a group of bridesmaids all with the same hair and makeup like a line of chorus girls is a very passé look. Not to mention which, it is unlikely that one style is going to be equally attractive on all of your attendants. It is much better to give them some general guidelines and then allow them to work with their hairstylist to come up with the best individual option for each woman.

If your wedding is formal or in the evening, you may wish to request that your bridesmaids wear their hair up. Medium length hair is great for this; there is enough hair to fashion into a style that will hold, and yet not so much hair an updo becomes too heavy or cumbersome to endure all night. The trend these days for both brides and bridesmaids is for updos that feel natural, rather than too stiff or contrived. What to avoid? Anything that smacks of the high school prom, such as stiff curls pinned atop the head or formed curled tendrils on each side of the face.

A soft bun at the nape of the neck is one very pretty look for bridesmaids. This looks especially nice for ladies who have a bit of wave in their hair. The sides of the hair should be loosely gathered to allow the natural wave to show. Then the back is pinned into a slightly messy bun with a few little sprouts of hair peeking out to keep the effect natural. Dress it up with a sparkly hairpin or two that matches the rest of the bridesmaid jewelry.

If your bridesmaids (or you) prefer a more classic hairstyle, a lovely option is a chignon. This classic twist has been in style with society ladies virtually forever, and it always looks neat and polished. To keep it modern, avoid pulling the hair back from the hairline too tightly (you don’t want your attendants to look like aging ballet instructors!); a soft sweep is much more contemporary. The French twist is an excellent choice for bridesmaids with anything from just below the shoulder medium length hair down to long hair almost to the waist.

Half up hairstyles are very pretty for bridesmaids, and most will prefer them over a full updo if the wedding is not very formal. Even though it is a relatively simple way to wear the hair, it will still turn out best if it is done by a professional. It takes a trained hand to elevate the half up hairstyle from everyday basic to something pretty enough to wear in a wedding.

One way to make a half up hairstyle look special is to gently backcomb the top before securing it. Another very trendy look is to weave in a few small braids along the sides of the hair. Never pin this style back with a basic drugstore barrette. Either choose a jeweled clip that coordinates with the bridesmaid jewelry, or use a clear hairband and cover it by wrapping a strand of the bridesmaid’s own hair around it. This way, your bridesmaids will look fresh, modern, and pretty as a picture for your wedding day.
